Buick Regal: Front Brake Caliper Replacement (J17)

Removal Procedure

WARNING: Brake Dust Warning.

WARNING: Use of eye goggles is necessary to prevent personal injury.

WARNING: Brake Fluid Irritant Warning.

CAUTION: Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution.

1. Raise and support the vehicle.

2. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.

3.

Disc Brakes

Brake Hose Fitting Bolt (1) - Remove.

4. Front Brake Hose(2) - Remove.

NOTE: The front brake hose washers may stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.

5. Front Brake Hose Washer(3) - Remove and DISCARD[2x].

6. Cap the brake hose fitting to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

7. Cap the brake caliper inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

8.

Disc Brakes

NOTE: Do NOT use any air tools to remove or install the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.

Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt(1) - [2x].

Front Brake Caliper (1) - Remove.

NOTE: For the sake of clarity the illustration shows the brake caliper bracket sectioned.

Inspect the brake caliper guide pins (2) for freedom of movement, and inspect the condition of the guide pin boots (1). Move the guide pins inboard and outboard within the bracket bores, without disengaging the slides from the boots, and observe for the following:

  • Restricted caliper guide pin movement
  • Looseness in the brake caliper mounting bracket
  • Seized or binding caliper guide pins
  • Split or torn boots

11. If a condition exists - Replace damaged components.

Installation Procedure

1.

Disc Brakes

Front Brake Caliper (1) - Install.

2.

Disc Brakes

Ensure the 2 front brake caliper guides seat (arrow) correctly in the brake caliper.

3.

Disc Brakes

CAUTION: Fastener Caution.

Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt(1) - Install and tighten 47 N.m (35 lb ft) [2x].

4.

Disc Brakes

Remove the cap from the brake hose fitting.

5. Front Brake Hose Washer(3) - Install[2x] - Use NEW seals.

6. Front Brake Hose(2) - Install.

WARNING: Make sure the brake hose is not twisted, tensioned or kinked after installation. With the suspension settled, check that there is no contact with the surrounding components when moving the steering from stop to stop. Failure to comply could result in damage to the brake hose and lead to severe or fatal injuries.

7. Brake Hose Fitting Bolt (1) - Install and tighten 40 N.m (30 lb ft).

8. Bleed the brake system.

9. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.

10. Slowly release the brake pedal.

11. Repeat steps (9 - 10)until a firm brake pedal is obtained.

This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.

12. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum-full level with GM approved brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.

13. Install the front tire and wheel assembly.

REAR BRAKE CALIPER REPLACEMENT (GNC)

Removal Procedure

WARNING: Brake Dust Warning.

WARNING: Use of eye goggles is necessary to prevent personal injury.

WARNING: Brake Fluid Irritant Warning.

CAUTION: Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution.

1. Set the parking brake in Service Mode.

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
  3. Select Electronic Brake Control Module.
  4. Select Control Functions.

NOTE: Do NOT apply any brake pressure during this step.

  1. Select Rear Brake Caliper Piston Retract.

2. Raise and support the vehicle.

3. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.

Disc Brakes

Brake Hose Fitting Bolt (1) - Remove.

5. Rear Brake Hose(2) - Remove.

NOTE: The rear brake hose washers may stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.

6. Rear Brake Hose Washer(3) - Remove and DISCARD[2x].

7. Cap the brake hose fitting to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

8. Cap the brake caliper inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

9.

Disc Brakes

NOTE:

  • Do NOT use any air tools to remove or install the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.
  • Install an open end wrench to hold the caliper guide pin in line with the brake caliper while removing or installing the caliper guide pin bolt.(2)

Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt(1) - [2x].

Electrical Connector(2)@Parking Brake Actuator - Disconnect.

11. Rear Brake Caliper(1) - Remove.

12. Parking Brake Actuator Replacement (GNC) Parking Brake Actuator Replacement (GNQ) - Remove.

NOTE: For the sake of clarity the illustration shows the rear brake caliper bracket sectioned.

Inspect the brake caliper guide pins (1) for freedom of movement, and inspect the condition of the guide pin boots (2). Move the guide pins inboard and outboard within the bracket bores, without disengaging the slides from the boots, and observe for the following:

14. If a condition exists - Replace damaged components.

Installation Procedure

1. Parking Brake Actuator Replacement (GNC) Parking Brake Actuator Replacement (GNQ) - Install.

2.

Disc Brakes

Rear Brake Caliper(1) - Install.

3. Electrical Connector(2)@Parking Brake Actuator - Connect.

Disc Brakes

CAUTION: Fastener Caution.

NOTE:

  • Do NOT use any air tools to remove or install the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.
  • Install an open end wrench to hold the caliper guide pin in line with the brake caliper while removing or installing the caliper guide pin bolt.(2) Allowing the open end wrench to come in contact with the brake caliper will cause a pulsation when the brakes are applied.

Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt(1) - Install and tighten 35 N.m (26 lb ft) [2x].

Disc Brakes

Remove the cap from the brake hose fitting.

6. Rear Brake Hose Washer(3) - Install[2x] - Use NEW seals.

7. Rear Brake Hose(2) - Install.

8. Brake Hose Fitting Bolt (1) - Install and tighten 40 N.m (30 lb ft).

9. Bleed the brake system.

10. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.

11. Slowly release the brake pedal.

12. Repeat steps (9 – 10)until a firm brake pedal is obtained.

This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.

13. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum-full level with GM approved brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.

14. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation - Install.

15. Leave the parking brake Service Mode.

The park brake system calibrates autonomously.

REAR BRAKE CALIPER REPLACEMENT (GNQ)

Removal Procedure

WARNING: Brake Dust Warning.

WARNING: Use of eye goggles is necessary to prevent personal injury.

WARNING: Brake Fluid Irritant Warning.

CAUTION: Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution.

1. Raise and support the vehicle.

2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.

3. Parking Brake Actuator Replacement (GNC) Parking Brake Actuator Replacement (GNQ) - Remove.

4.

Disc Brakes

Brake Hose Fitting Bolt (2) - Remove.

5. Rear Brake Hose(3) - Remove.

NOTE: The rear brake hose washers may stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.

6. Rear Brake Hose Washer(1) - Remove and DISCARD[2x].

7. Cap the brake hose fitting to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

8. Cap the brake caliper inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

9.

NOTE:

  • Do NOT use any air tools to remove or install the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.
  • Install an open end wrench to hold the caliper guide pin in line with the brake caliper while removing or installing the caliper guide pin bolt.(1)

Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt(2) - [2x].

Rear Brake Caliper(1) - Remove.

Rear Brake Caliper(1) - Install.

NOTE:

  • Do NOT use any air tools to remove or install the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.
  • Install an open end wrench to hold the caliper guide pin in line with the brake caliper while removing or installing the caliper guide pin bolt.(1)Allowing the open end wrench to come in contact with the brake caliper will cause a pulsation when the brakes are applied.

Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt(2) - Install and tighten 35 N.m (26 lb ft) [2x].
