Removal Procedure
WARNING: Brake Dust Warning. WARNING: Brake Fluid Irritant Warning.
WARNING: Use of eye goggles is necessary to prevent personal injury.
CAUTION: Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution
NOTE: Always replace disc brake pads in axle sets.
1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
4. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies.
5.
Retract the brake caliper pistons.
NOTE: The brake pad spring is tensioned and has to be firmly hold in place when removing the brake pad pins.
6. Remove the brake pad pins (1) using a suitable drift and hammer. Hold on tight the brake pad spring (2) until first brake pad pin (1) has been removed.
7. Brake Pad Spring(2) - Remove.
8.
Front Disc Brake Pad(1) - Remove[2x].
Installation Procedure
1. Inspect the brake caliper piston boots for damage or deterioration. Replace the brake caliper piston boots if damaged or deteriorated.
2. Using a suitable spreader tool, carefully push back all 4 front brake caliper pistons until fully seated into brake caliper bores.
3. Clean the brake pad contact surfaces of the brake caliper from any debris or corrosion.
4.
Front Disc Brake Pad(1) - Install[2x].
5.
Install the brake pad pins (1) together with the brake pad spring (2). Drive the brake pad pins (1) into the brake caliper using a drift until fully seated.
First install one brake pad pin until fully seated. Thereafter insert the spring behind the pin and firmly press and hold brake pad spring into position. Now install second brake pad pin and check spring for correct seat.
6. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies.
7. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
8. Slowly release the brake pedal.
9. Repeat steps (7 - 8) until a firm brake pedal is obtained.
This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
10. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum-full level with GM approved brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.
11. Burnish the brake pads and rotors.
FRONT DISC BRAKE PADS REPLACEMENT (J17)
Removal Procedure
WARNING: Brake Dust Warning.
WARNING: Brake Fluid Irritant Warning.
CAUTION: Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution
NOTE: Always replace disc brake pads in axle sets.
1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed before proceeding.
3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
4. Raise and support the vehicle.
5. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies.
6.
Install a large C-clamp over the top of the brake caliper housing and against the back of the outboard disc brake pad.(1)
7. Using the C-clamp (1), compress the brake caliper piston fully into the brake caliper bore.
8.
Check the complete retraction of brake caliper piston by verifying that the distance a can not be reduced.
9.
NOTE: Do NOT use any air tools to remove or install the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.
Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt(1) - Lower - Loosen the bolt, but do NOT remove.
10.
Push back the brake caliper (1) by hand.
11. Ensure the gap a is big enough for loosening the inner brake pad.
12.
WARNING: Disc brake pads are adhered to the caliper piston using an adhesive patch. The disc brake pads must be separated from the caliper piston.
Do NOT insert the pry tool through bridge window to pry against the piston face. Prying at this location may damage the brake caliper piston. Failure to follow this warning may result in brake system failure and/or personal injury.
Loose the inner brake pad (1) by twisting a screwdriver (4)between inner brake pad (1)and brake caliper (2).
13.
NOTE: Do NOT use any air tools to remove or install the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.
Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt (1) - Upper - Remove.
14.
Pivot the brake caliper downward and secure with heavy mechanics wire, or equivalent. (1)
15.
Front Disc Brake Outer Pad(2) - Remove.
16. Front Disc Brake Inner Pad(1) - Remove.
17.
Front Disc Brake Pad Retaining Spring(1) - Remove and DISCARD[2x].
18.
NOTE: For the sake of clarity the illustration shows the brake caliper bracket sectioned.
Inspect the brake caliper guide pins (2) for freedom of movement, and inspect the condition of the guide pin boots (1). Move the guide pins inboard and outboard within the bracket bores, without disengaging the slides from the boots, and observe for the following:
19. If a condition exists - Replace damaged components.
20.
Inspect the brake caliper piston and brake caliper piston boot (1). Observe the following:
21. If a condition exists - Replace damaged components.
Installation Procedure
1. Thoroughly clean the disc brake pad retainer spring contact area and surfaces of the brake caliper bracket of any corrosion and debris.
2.
Front Disc Brake Pad Retaining Spring(1) - Install NEW[2x].
3.
If installing NEW brake pads, remove the adhesive backing paper from the brake pad insulators.(1)
4.
Front Disc Brake Inner Pad(1) - Install.
5. Front Disc Brake Outer Pad(2) - Install.
CAUTION: The phenolic brake caliper piston can be damaged if it contacts the edges of the brake pads upon installation. To avoid phenolic brake caliper piston damage, carefully hold the brake pads against the rotor and do NOT allow the caliper piston to contact the edges of the brake pads while installing the caliper. If the brake caliper piston sustains any damage, the entire caliper will need to be replaced.
6. Ensure the brake caliper guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper guide pin and the guide pin slides freely in caliper bracket bore.
7. Pivot the brake caliper to the installed position.
8.
Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt(1)- Upper - Install and tighten 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
9.
CAUTION: Fastener Caution.

10. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
11. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
12. Slowly release the brake pedal.
13. Repeat steps (11 – 12) until a firm brake pedal is obtained.
This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
14. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum-full level with GM approved brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.
